Preparation is nine tenths of a lawn
Turf will root in almost anything for a fortnight, which is how bad lawns get sold. Whether it thrives for years depends on what is underneath. We strip the old grass and weeds rather than burying them, break up compacted ground so water and roots can move, level with screened topsoil where the garden needs it, and firm and rake the surface to a fine, even bed. Only then do we lay. It takes longer than throwing rolls at bare mud, and it is why our lawns stay flat and drain properly instead of dying off in patches.

Laid fresh, watered in, backed with advice
Turf is a living product and it hates sitting rolled up on a pallet, so we schedule delivery for the day we lay. Rolls go down tight with staggered joints, edges are trimmed to your borders and paths, and the whole lawn is watered in before we leave. You get simple, honest aftercare instructions: how often to water in the first weeks, when to make the first cut and how short, and when the lawn is ready for furniture and football. Follow them and the lawn knits into the ground beneath it within weeks.

Real turf or artificial grass?
We lay both, so you will get a straight answer rather than a sales pitch. Real turf is cooler underfoot, better for wildlife and soil, and cheaper to lay, but it asks for mowing, feeding and water through dry spells. Artificial grass costs more up front and repays it in weekends: no mowing, green all year, and it shrugs off dogs and shaded corners where real grass sulks. Plenty of gardens use both, real lawn in the open, artificial in the shade or the play area. Tell us how the garden gets used and we will recommend honestly.

Turf & Lawns: your questions answered
When is the best time to lay turf?
Turf can be laid most of the year in Wiltshire. Spring and autumn are ideal because rain does the watering for you. Summer laying works with committed watering, and mild winter spells are fine too. We will advise on timing when we quote.
How much does turfing cost?
The price depends on the lawn size and how much preparation the ground needs, which is usually the bigger share of the work. We quote a fixed price after seeing the garden, covering clearance, preparation, topsoil, turf and laying.
How soon can I walk on a new lawn?
Stay off it for the first two to three weeks while the roots knit down, apart from moving sprinklers. It is usually ready for its first light cut at around three weeks, and for normal family use within five or six.
Can I lay turf myself?
You can, and for a small flat area it is a fair weekend job. The hard part is the preparation: stripping, levelling and firming the ground. If the area is large, sloped or currently rough grass, professional preparation is what decides the result.
Do you remove the old lawn?
Yes. We strip the old grass and weeds and take the waste away rather than rotavating them back in, which is a common cause of lumpy, weedy new lawns. The new turf goes down on clean, prepared ground.
