Porcelain, stone, block or resin?
Each material earns its keep differently. Porcelain is the modern favourite: crisp, consistent and almost stain-proof, ideal for a clean contemporary look. Natural sandstone brings colour variation and character that suits older Wiltshire homes. Block paving works well where the patio needs to tie into paths or a driveway, and resin gives a smooth, jointless surface with no weeds and nothing to trip on. The part you never see is the part that matters
A patio that puddles, rocks or grows a green slime line against the house wall was built wrong underneath. We excavate and build a compacted sub-base, set falls so rainwater runs away from the house, and keep the finished level safely below the damp course. Where the garden holds water we build in drainage at the same time. It is the least glamorous part of the job and the most important, and it is why our patios still sit flat and dry years after the furniture went out.

Patios: your questions answered
How much does a new patio cost?
It depends on the size, the material and how much ground preparation is needed. Porcelain and natural stone sit above block and resin on materials, but labour and groundwork are similar. We give you a free, itemised quote after seeing the space.
Do I need planning permission for a patio?
Almost never for a normal domestic patio at ground level. Very large areas of non-permeable paving can have drainage implications, which we design for anyway. If your property is listed or in a conservation area we will flag anything worth checking.
Porcelain or natural stone: which is better?
Neither is better; they suit different homes. Porcelain is uniform, dense and very low-maintenance. Natural sandstone varies in tone and ages characterfully but benefits from an occasional clean and seal. We bring samples so you can judge both in your own garden.
How long does a patio take to build?
A typical garden patio takes three to five days depending on size, access and how much digging out is needed. Steps, raised beds or drainage add time. We give you a realistic schedule with the quote and keep the garden usable as we work.
Can you match a patio to my driveway?
Yes, and it usually looks best that way. We can pick up the same block, colour family or resin blend used on your drive, or deliberately contrast them. If we are doing both at once, one visit and one quote covers the lot.
