Artificial grass lawn installed by Stoneage Property Care in a Wiltshire garden

Artificial grass in Melksham and across Wiltshire

Green all year, no mowing, and fitted on a proper base so it drains, stays flat and lasts.

Call it artificial grass, astro turf or fake grass, the appeal is the same: a lawn that looks freshly mown every day of the year and never asks for the mower. We install artificial grass across Melksham, Trowbridge, Chippenham and the surrounding Wiltshire towns, fitted the way it should be, on an excavated, free-draining base with proper edges, so it performs like a surface rather than a rug thrown over mud.

  • Green all year, no mowing, no feeding
  • Pet-friendly and child-friendly surfaces
  • Free-draining base, no puddles or smells
  • Neat edges that stay put for years

Where artificial grass genuinely wins

There are gardens where real turf struggles no matter who lays it: heavy shade under trees, narrow side strips that never dry out, play areas that get worn to mud every winter, and gardens whose owners are away too often to water. That is where astro turf earns its keep. It stays green through drought and shade alike, drains fast after rain, and gives dogs and children a clean surface that does not turn to paw prints and mud through the house. For busy households it simply removes the lawn from the to-do list.

  • Thrives in shade where real grass gives up
  • No mud through the house in winter
  • Ideal for play areas, pets and busy owners

Fitted properly, so it lasts

Cheap artificial grass installs fail the same way cheap driveways do: at the base. We excavate the old lawn, build up and compact a free-draining aggregate base, add a weed membrane, and fix the grass with proper jointing and edge restraints so seams never creep open. A kiln-dried sand dressing keeps the pile upright and the surface stable. Water drains straight through, which matters as much for pets as for puddles. It is the same groundwork discipline we apply to everything we lay.

Honest advice before you commit

Artificial grass is not always the right answer, and we would rather tell you that at the quote than have you discover it after. A large open lawn in full sun is often better served by real turf, which costs less to lay and feels better underfoot on hot days. Fake grass shines in the situations real grass hates. Many of the gardens we finish use both, and because we install both, the recommendation you get is based on your garden, not on what we happen to sell.

FAQs

Artificial Grass: your questions answered

Is artificial grass good for dogs?

Yes, it is one of the most common reasons people choose it. Dogs cannot dig it up or turn it to mud, mess is easy to clean off, and a free-draining base with an occasional rinse keeps the surface fresh and odour-free.

How long does artificial grass last?

A quality grass fitted on a proper base typically gives fifteen years or more of normal garden use. The pile softens gradually rather than failing suddenly. Poor installs fail early at the seams and edges, which is why the fitting matters more than the brand.

Does artificial grass drain like a real lawn?

Fitted correctly, yes. The backing is perforated and the aggregate base underneath is free-draining, so rain passes straight through without puddling. That base preparation is the difference between a dry, fresh lawn and a soggy one.

How much does artificial grass cost?

It costs more than real turf to install because of the base work and the grass itself, but it repays that in zero mowing, feeding and watering. We quote a fixed price after measuring up, with grass samples you can see and feel first.

Is astro turf the same as artificial grass?

People use astro turf, fake grass and artificial grass to mean the same thing: a synthetic lawn surface. Modern garden grasses are softer and far more realistic than old sports-style astro turf, with varied pile heights and natural colour blends.
