Newer surfaces come and go, but block paving keeps being chosen because it does everything well. The blocks are dense and hard-wearing, the patterns give real kerb appeal, and the format is forgiving: an oil stain or a cracked block is a ten minute swap, not a repair you can see from the street. Block paving or resin? An honest comparison
We install both, so we have no reason to push you either way. Block paving gives you the traditional look, patterns and borders, and block-by-block repairs. Resin bound gives you a smooth, seamless, permeable surface with less ongoing upkeep, because there are no joints for weeds to find. Block usually costs a little less to lay; resin usually costs less to look after. Plenty of customers combine them, with a resin drive framed by block paving borders. Laid properly, from the ground up
A block paved drive is only as flat as the base beneath it. Sunken wheel tracks and rocking blocks are almost always a base problem, not a block problem, so we excavate to depth, build up a compacted sub-base, and screed a proper laying course before a single block goes down. Edges are haunched in concrete so nothing spreads, and the whole surface is compacted and sanded at the end. It is the same standard of groundwork we put under every driveway we build.

Repairs, relays and tired drives
If your existing block paving has sunk in the wheel tracks, grown a crop of weeds or lost its colour, it can often be rescued. We lift and relay sunken areas over a rebuilt base, replace damaged blocks, and re-sand the joints so the surface locks tight again. Where the drive is past saving we will say so, and quote for a fresh surface instead, whether that is new block paving or a different finish. How much does block paving cost?
The price depends on the area, the block you choose and how much base work is needed, so we quote after a quick site visit. Block paving usually sits between tarmac and resin on price. Every quote is free, itemised and comes with no obligation.
Can single blocks really be replaced?
Yes. That is one of block paving's biggest advantages. A stained or cracked block can be lifted out and swapped for a spare in minutes, with no visible scar. We recommend keeping a few spare blocks from your installation for exactly this reason.
How do I stop weeds growing between blocks?
Weeds root in the sand joints from above, not from below. An occasional sweep and a re-sand with kiln-dried sand keeps joints tight, and a sealed surface makes it harder still. If an older drive is already overrun, we can clean, re-sand and refresh it.
Is block paving suitable for a sloped driveway?
Yes. Herringbone patterns lock together well on slopes and under turning wheels, which is why we usually recommend them for driveways. The key is the base and the edge restraints, which we build to hold the surface exactly where it was laid.
