Which driveway surface is right for you?
Each surface has its own strengths, and the right one depends on your budget, your home and how you use the drive. Resin bound gives a smooth, seamless, permeable finish with almost no upkeep, and it is the surface we are asked for most. Block paving is the classic choice: individual blocks in patterns and borders, and any damaged block can be lifted and replaced. Tarmac is the practical workhorse, fast to lay and great value on larger drives. Gravel is the budget-friendly option for rural properties and long runs. If you are not sure, tell us what matters most to you and we will give you an honest steer when we quote.
- Resin: seamless, permeable, lowest upkeep
- Block paving: classic looks, repairable block by block
- Tarmac: fast, hard-wearing and cost-effective
- Gravel: simple, affordable and easy to top up
Every driveway starts underground
The surface you choose matters less than what sits underneath it. A driveway is only as good as its base, which is why every job we do starts with proper excavation, a compacted sub-base and drainage that actually takes water away from your house. We handle our own groundworks and drainage rather than subcontracting it, so the part of your driveway you never see is built to the same standard as the part you do. That is the difference between a drive that still looks right in ten years and one that sinks in two.
- Excavated to the correct depth for the surface
- Compacted sub-base, no shortcuts
- Drainage and edging designed in from the start
Patios and paths to match
A new driveway looks even better when the paths and patio work with it rather than against it. We build patios in porcelain, natural stone, block and resin, and paths that tie the front and back of your property together. Doing the driveway and the paving in one visit usually costs less than doing them separately, because the machinery, the muck-away and the materials are already on site. If you are planning both, ask us to quote for the lot and see the difference.
Old driveway past its best?
We replace tired concrete, cracked tarmac and weed-filled block paving all the time, and we can usually reuse or rebuild the existing base, which keeps the cost down. We dig out and cart away the old surface, put right any drainage problems that caused it to fail, and lay the new drive properly. You get a firm, itemised quote up front, the same team from start to finish, and a tidy site at the end of every day.
- Old surfaces removed and carted away
- Existing bases reused where they are sound
- The same team from dig-out to finish

Driveways & Paving: your questions answered
Which driveway surface is cheapest?
Gravel is usually the cheapest to lay, followed by tarmac, with block paving and resin bound above that. Whole-life cost is different: resin and block need very little spent on them over the years. We will price the options side by side so you can compare properly.
How long does a new driveway take?
Most domestic driveways take between two and five days depending on the size, the surface and how much digging out is needed. We give you a realistic timescale with your quote and keep the site safe and tidy throughout the job.
Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?
Usually not. Permeable surfaces like resin bound and gravel drain naturally, so they do not normally need permission. Non-permeable surfaces over five square metres need the water to drain within your boundary. We design drainage in and flag anything that needs checking.
Can you replace my old concrete driveway?
Yes. We break out and remove old concrete, tarmac and block paving regularly. Once the old surface is out we check the base, fix any drainage problems that caused it to fail, and lay whichever new surface you have chosen over a properly prepared foundation.
